Here's the story we tell.

On Thread

Thread creates bonds.

Think of all the common things a home can stack away in its cozy corners, the forgettable ones, the basic items that turn a house into a home. The ones that turn from luxury to necessity as soon as you can’t remember where you’ve stowed them. A needle. A nail clipper. A brush. A bit of duct tape. A roll of thread. Can you see it now?

The bond

Though quite common today, thread was once quite a reputable item to have in one’s household. With countless steps involved in the process of developing a single, fine, piece of thread, from the drudging gathering of plant material in the field, to the careful treating of the bunch, to the fine weaving of the string. Thread took many days to make, and many hands worked together to create. The bond.

The Symbolism

The symbolism of thread dates back to ancient times. The Japanese have compared our very blood vessels to a long string of thread that starts from the bottom of the heart, racing and clumping around our breathing bodies until it reaches the very tip of one’s toes. It does not end its course there, however, racing farther out, to the tips of one’s soulmates’ toes, and in through their living flesh, and up to the very bottom of their hearts. The bond that is thus created is as strong as the string of destiny. The connection that is formed entangles the two in both time and space, with the promise of a bond that is destined to bring them together, regardless of distance, age, wealth or whatever tiny plans they had for themselves. An encounter that will leave a mark. The symbolism of thread dates back to ancient times.
